What a Standing Dosa can teach you??

Kids are great teachers. Do you know why? They teach the biggest principles of life in the simplest way. I am blessed with two such great teachers in my life. They inspire me to live simple, be happy for no reason and most importantly stay active all the time!!! Today I am going to share with you a small lesson I learned from my daughter about different perspectives.

The Incident

This incident had happened when she was about 3 years old. We were going out for shopping with her.  On the way we crossed the hotel where we go on weekends sometimes with her. Suddenly she shouted in excitement “see mom there the dosa is standing”. I was totally clueless what she was referring to for a minute.

Do you have any guesses?? She was referring to our favourite ghee Dosa. They have a picture of that near the entrance door surrounded by colourful chutneys like the above picture. (For those of you who are not familiar with Dosa read here to know more about it)  Till that moment I had never thought of Ghee Dosa as dosa in a standing position. Maximum I could ever correlate was the conical caps we wear on birthdays. But then that’s the innocence of kids right?

My Thoughts

Even after coming home the standing dosa was still in mind and I was wondering how different and unique each of us can think of same situations.  The dosa inspired me with two wonderful thoughts.

1.       How we can look at even normal things in a unique or completely different way?

2.       How different perspectives can add a lot of beauty to our life, relationships and conversations?

What do you think the reason behind a ghee dosa becoming standing dosai?? I believe it’s her clear and curious mind in work which we grown-ups miss a big time. Not to mention the preset image or perspective we have about everything. In other words we lose the curious child in us who looks at everything with a fresh outlook.

Difference perspectives, difference of opinion, Curious mind

The Take away

1.       How we can look at even normal things in a unique or completely different way?

If you look a bit deeper it is this wonder that helps them to find happiness in even small things. isn’t it?? By losing that child in us, we struggle to find happiness in even big things. Being a child at heart is about having joyful days more frequently. Doing new things more often. Its about seeing beauty in the simplest of things. Laughing your lungs out on the silliest jokes. Its about looking at life without an already set image of anything. That will help us to see very normal things in a very unique way.

Not being judgemental about people and the situations will help us to know people better and have some really wonderful moments in life. Lets see what people have in them and then come to a conclusion. Lets analyse a situation and then finalise whats wrong or right. I think this attitude can definitely bring lot of fresh air into your life and mind for sure.

2.       How different perspectives can add a lot of beauty to our life, relationships and conversations?

Now about the second point..Have you ever thought how boring our relationships and conversations will be if we all think and talk in the same way?? There won’t be any spiciness or sweetness in our relationships because there is nothing to argue about or to learn from the other person.

Difference perspectives, difference of opinion

The same scenario can be interpreted in many ways by each person based on their thinking capability and often their maturity level as well. Just like the same ghee roast being seen as a dosa standing by my daughter and as a birthday cap by me. And each of that view point can be correct in one way or the other. But we tend to miss this point very often.

Stepping into another person’s shoes will help us to see things from their angle and it also help us to come with constructive arguments as well.  The more we are open for others thinking and ideas, the more our success in getting acceptance from others as well. Being open to ideas and different viewpoints help us to grow better for sure.

The plant or the Water??

By this if am going to tell you to be like the water, to take the shape of the vessel each and every time and not to have an opinion for yourself about anything – absolutely not. I am asking you to be like a plant, which absorbs what’s required for its growth from the surroundings even when 100s of elements are available but still retain its uniqueness.

Accepting another person’s point of view or idea as better than ours requires great caliber and can’t be done by all without practice.  So starting from today, give a little effort to think from other person’s perspective. A little effort to accept them if its better than ours.

A small step from your side will do miracles in your relationships I can guarantee. Make conscious efforts to broaden the horizons of your thinking. This will make you a better human being personally and professionally without any doubts. Give it a try and let me know how it worked for you…

Next time whenever you see a standing dosai, let that remind you of all these and be the trigger to make you think high!

  1. Hi Mercy ma’am
I loved reading each line of your blog and yes I am a better person after that.
I can say you have the art of making people feel better and happy about their own situations and themselves than looking around for someone to acknowledge them
    Great job 👍🏻
