5 reasons why you need quality Me Time

Recently I heard a strikingly new thought (at least for me) about why many people are addicted to coffee. The speaker said that we are not addicted to coffee but addicted to the me time associated with it. His words stopped me and made me think about it.

Amid our daily chores at home and the office, having a coffee is like a break from all that. It is when we settle with ourselves. The colour, fragrance, and taste create that magical room where we can relax by shutting the external world. What an experience!!

If your coffee break is with your spouse or best friend, that will become both of yours we-time, where you speak about silly things or long pending wishes or a childhood memory, etc. This kind of exciting talk happened many times in my life. It is a complete mood lifter!

The question I have for you

Have you ever thought about what is the most frustrating thing in life?? Each one of you will have a different answer for this, I know for sure. But if you ask me this question, my answer will be lack of – me time. The frustration, stress, and anxiety I felt because of the lack of personal time were so high. I realised it was as important as oxygen for me, especially in these times of WFH!! Even with some support, I found the tight schedule draining all my mental and physical strength. I felt I was missing something big in my life. It took me months of struggle to realise what I was missing. I missed myself!!

I know this happens to almost all of us when we get more and more responsibilities in life. And for women, this is more damaging that at some point in life, they even forget what they like and dislike, whether it is food, hobbies, movies, songs, etc. They go with the flow of their family’s likes and dislikes. That is how society trains us as we grow up.

But it is time to stop this least to some extent. Why is it so? Because YOU CANT SPREAD HAPPINESS WHEN YOU ARE NOT HAPPY. You will feel miserable when you do not take care of yourself, when you are not listening to your heart or when you are not going after your dreams. Taking care of yourself – your body, mind, and soul is the first thing you have to do if you want to give the best of yourself to others.

The pros of having quality Me Time

There are multiple benefits to having quality me time regularly. All those studies around this topic proved the various physical and mental benefits of having a good me time. To quickly mention a few

  • Relieves stress – This means you will be more patient in picking toys from your hallway for the 10th time in a day.
  • Relieves chronic pains – This is associated with the first point. When your stress levels go down, it also brings down all those unexplained body pains you feel. Yes, medically proved.
  • Improves the quality of your sleep – This means less tossing and turning in bed.
  • Improves immune system – This is connected to points no: 1 and 3 above. When stress goes down, along with a night of good sleep, your body repairs itself efficiently.
  • More positive emotions – This is understood, right? Less stress, better sleep, and a happy body. What else can be the result other than a positive view of life?

The cons of not having quality Me Time

Of course, you don’t have all the benefits above. But, out of all these, the most dangerous part is your stress level. It destroys your body, mind, relationships, and everything. So making time for yourself to heal, repair, and reconnect with your inner self is as inevitable as breathing. After all, what is the benefit of breathing if you are not living truly but just alive??

I know our society has a little different thinking about all these self-care activities. We live in a society where overworking is considered the stepping stone to a happy life and successful profession. When you take time for rest or to do something for your happiness, most of the time, the words you may hear may not be very encouraging. But do not listen to them even if they are your own family. Do something for yourself each day. It can be as simple as listening to your favourite song, reading your favourite book, watching a movie alone, walking on a grassy field barefoot, or restarting a hobby or passion you lost somewhere. 

Fill your Pot!!!

Right now, your thoughts are it is easier said than done, am I right?? NO…We can do this if we are ready to put in some extra effort. If you ask me why I am sure about this? It is because this blog is my Me time. I am trying to do this side by side with a full-time job, having two small kids and a family to manage. Same way, you can also give it a try. Try and realize how it changes your mood, energy, and overall vibes!!! 

I guarantee you will feel happier and more relaxed at the least when you are doing that activity. It will have a rippling effect on your overall life as well.
